Endoscopy is a very common procedure.
There tends to be significant preparation from the proceduralist's perspective- food restriction and bowel preparation.
A cannula (a drip) is inserted into your arm before you are given sedation.
You are positioned, lying on your left hand side on a bed.
Sedative medication is administered via the drip.
If you are having a gastroscopy, you will be asked to bite on a "bite block", which protects your teeth.
During the anaesthetic, you will be unconscious.
The length of each procedure is typically twenty to forty minutes and during this time, the anaesthetist as well as an anaesthetic nurse will be in attendance to optimise your care.
Discomfort after the procedure is very mild.
